Hinsdale County can be found on any map at the D2 location. It was formed in 1874, from the Parent County of Conejos. The County Clerk has marriage and land records recorded. It is the smallest County in Colorado with 570 year round residents. It is approximately 97% public lands and 46% wilderness. The second largest natural lake in Colorado is located in Hinsdale County. It was formed naturally about 700 years ago by the Slumgullion Mountain Earthflow, which blocked the Gunnison River, causing the formation of the lake.
