Welcome to New Glarus
| The flavor of
Switzerland is everywhere in New Glarus. The
vibrant atmosphere created by the Swiss flags and banners,
the colorful canton shields, the Swiss architecture, and
geranium-filled flower boxes will carry your imagination
to the main street of a Swiss mountain town. In 1845, during a time of severe economic conditions in Kanton Glarus, Switzerland, the Glarus Emigration Society sent scouts to locate new lands in America. The scouts established their new home here in southwestern Wisconsin and called it "New Glarus." |

Since that time , there has been a steady stream of Swiss immigrants to this charming village. The result is that the rich folklore traditions of the Alpine homeland abound here. And the local citizens love to share those traditions with the thousands of visitors who come here every yearmany, all the way from Switzerland!
New Glarus is located in the heart of Green County, Wisconsin. Its beautiful rolling hills, dotted with small towns, farms, wooded pastures, and grazing cattle, are much like the alpine meadows and farmlands around Glarus, Switzerland. When you arrive at the village entrance, you'll quickly understand its popularity as a destination. New Glarus is America's "Little Switzerland."
